Extraction and Visualisation of Model Views using Data Analytics

Synoptix and Loughborough University has been awarded funding through Innovate UK (UKRI) for a 4-month Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) project entitled: “Extraction and Visualisation of Model Views using Data Analytics”.

Challenge

Synoptix and Loughborough University has been awarded funding through Innovate UK (UKRI) for a 4-month Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) project entitled: “Extraction and Visualisation of Model Views using Data Analytics”.

As the complexity, scale, and scope of MBSE system models grow, it becomes harder to generate both model content and value-added cross-cutting model views. Current modelling tools have limited capability for anything beyond the simplest data analysis and do not allow us to meet the challenges of Industry 4.0. This project aims to explore the use of Data Analysis techniques to automatically generate stakeholder-aware model viewpoints.

Approach

Loughborough University’s Dr Siyuan Ji (Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering) and Dr Paul Palmer (Visiting Fellow in Complex Data Systems and Analytical Fluency) will work to:

  • create model extension mechanisms to enable dual-way labelling of model views onto model elements.

  • create scripts to utilise and process the labels to produce view-based diagrams.

  • analyse the data within RStudio to transform the data set into a useable data structure.

  • undertake statistical analysis of the data structure to derive patterns in the use of natural language with associated model semantics.

  • develop rule-based algorithms for automated model-view annotation.

  • explore the use of Large Language Models for model view extraction.

Dr Ji and Dr Palmer bring decades of experience with MBSE, data manipulation, natural language processing, and complex data analysis, with a track record of delivering impactful research for industry that focusses on real-world challenges.

Benefit

Synoptix believes that this project will offer:

  • increased explainability for stakeholders with no modelling experience.

  • reduce barrier to entry for customer modelling efforts.

  • realise cost savings in model generation and increased consistency of outputs.

Synoptix intend to continue to develop the relationship with Loughborough University to deliver further research-based collaborations, with the aim of incorporating these world-leading techniques into Synoptix’s service offering.
