The Challenge:

Synoptix were asked by our customer to ensure the success of their export campaign for the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile. While our customer has sold and supplied multiple missiles and weapon systems to foreign governments, in each case they require expert help to understand the client’s needs – in this case Poland.

Synoptix were tasked with:

  • Supporting the development of the statement of work

  • Defining the system requirement for export to Poland,

  • Transferring the technology programme with system engineering know-how that would streamline the process for future export

The Approach:

Two of our senior engineers spent two months familiarising themselves with the product and programmes in order to understand where further expertise was needed.

This tranche of work concentrated on assessing the potential to re-use existing Anti-Air Modular Missile documentation and databases for the variants that would be needed in future. In other words, a future capability horizon study that analysed and assessed what would remain relevant.

After analysing the system requirements, we are now supporting the delivery of the subsequent (£2billion) contract. Subsequent work included carrying out a gap analysis to identify areas of improvement – these  were then reported to the customer with recommendations for implementation and optimisation.

The Benefits:

The breadth and specialism of our engineers

Much of the work undertaken related to the transfer of activities to in-country industry. Our collective experience of similar programmes means we understand:

  • What is important for the OEM and the recipient - and if that might produce conflicts

  • The importance of ensuring that the recipient is aware of what is required of them in order for MBDA to fulfil its Design and Manufacturing Authority responsibilities

  • The restrictions that, for example, different security classifications can impose in an export environment.

“Synoptix are highly skilled in interrogating and utilising (initially) unfamiliar company systems and databases. For example trawling Quality Management Systems to draw out and then communicate the salient process steps or areas for improvement.”
